Epidemiological stations by county

The epidemilogical stations by county are the result of aggregation of institutions to the county level. administrative formats, "Shixiaqu" and "Municipality Compatible." The directories contained no listing of institutions for a few counties. We cannot interpret this to mean that no institution existed, so we assigned missing codes (-99999) to each of these counties in all aggregation variables. For certain administrative units (Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao) we have assigned the missing code equal to -66666. There is one record in the file for Qinghai Hu which exists as an item in the county boundary coverages. This record, with GB code equal to 900000, has been assigned its own missing value equal to -55555 for all variables. Note that epidemiological station-years refers to the cumulative number of years of existence of an institution or institutions in a county beginning in 1950. 1950 was taken as a start date because date of founding was reported inconsistently for institutions founded before 1949. The county data are keyed to the administrative divisions of China described in the 1986 edition of the Guobiao Codes (GB2260-86).
